Grand Master Chang Keun [ C.K. ] Choi


1956   Began training in Tae Kwon Do and Karate under Instructor [Army Captain] Hong Sung In and Instructor Kim.

1958   Trained under Master [Major] Woo Jong Lim, Director of Tae Kwon Do for the Korean 1st Army.

1961   Taught Tae Kwon Do at largest Korean Army Training Center under Master [Lt. Colonel] Woo Jong Lim and General Choi Hong Hi, assisted General Choi to create Gae-Baek Pattern and created High Jumping Side Kick.
1962   Won the First Korean Tae Kwon Do Championships in Sparring and Pattern in Won Joo city, in Korea. This was the World First Tae Kwon Do Championship. Selected as a member of the First Korean Army Representative Team.
1963   Won the First Korean Tae Soo Do [Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Kong Soo Do] Full Contact Heavyweight Championship in 3rd, 4th,5th Degree Black Belt Division. Won the Korean Tae Soo Do Representative Full Contact Heavyweight Championship.
1964   Was invited by Malaysia Tae Kwon Do Association to teach. Became one of the two First Professional Tae Kwon Do Instructors recognized by the South Korean Government.
1965   International Tae Kwon Do Federation [I.T.F.] was formed and received #5 Reorganization Plaque.

1970   Opened the first Tae Kwon Do school in Vancouver and Western Canada.

1973   Was a Member of I.T.F. Demonstration Team to tour the world in 1973,1978 1979 and 1981. Was Chairman of I.T.F. Umpire Committee.
1980   Created Sparring Patterns. Designed the ITF Uniform Tree Logo.

1981   Promoted to 8th Degree Black Belt by ITF. Was one of two ITF Representatives attempting to merge ITF with WTF. Master Choi dropped support for General Choi because of his ties with communist North Korea.
2002   Became 9th Degree Black Belt.

2007   Published his book “The Korean Martial Art of Tae Kwon Do and Early History”. Was inducted into the Tae Kwon Do Hall of Fame in New York, USA.
2012   Received the Queen Elizabeth ll Diamond Jubilee Medal Award for the dedication of teaching Tae Kwon Do in Canada and around the world.
2013   Wrote “Traditional Martial Arts Philosophy” with Master Tom Thurston. Continues to travel worldwide to teach and promote Tae Kwon Do.
2014   Made sparring patterns DVD in association with Tae Kwon Do International U K and Tae Kwon Do association of Great Britain.
2015   Wrote “Traditional Martial Arts Philosophy” with Master Tom Thurston.

2017   Was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in Vancouver, Canada. Continues to travel worldwide to teach and promote Tae Kwon Do.
2023   Was appointed to the Order of Canada by her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon Governor General of Canada for the dedication to the development and promotion of Tae Kwon Do in Canada and around the world.
